Free Family Kite Festival

In partnership with the City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department and the People for Leisure and Youth, Inc. (PLAY), the Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum will host its annual Family Kite Festival from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 7th at Rotary Centennial Park located at 2625 South College Drive in Santa Maria.

The Kite Festival will feature professional kite-flying demonstrations, contests, food, vendors, and music. Kite Ambassadors from the American Kitefliers Association will be on-hand to coach families and help them learn how to smoothly fly a kite. The SMV Discovery Museum will also host its kite “hospital” at the park for any kites that need “first aid” or minor repairs.

Children of all ages will chase after kite tails and try their luck at the “Running of the Bols Race,” during which contestants wear parachute-type kites and race each other in a scientific demonstration of how energy, inertia, and personal grit come together for some memorable family fun. A limited number of free kites will be distributed during the event.

“It takes a village to pull off a spectacular event of this magnitude,” said Jenn Malone, Executive Director of the museum.

Interested sponsors and questions about how to be a vendor can contact Jenn Malone at the museum by phone (805) 928-4414 or by email at info@smvdiscoverymuseum.org. The museum is located at 705 South McClelland Street. The Recreation and Parks Department will be organizing and booking vendors and booths.
