First Decorative Crosswalk for Santa Maria

First Decorative Crosswalk for Santa Maria

The first decorative crosswalk in downtown Santa Maria is anticipated to be installed this spring in a City-led project.

The crosswalk will focus on the four-way intersection at Cook and South McClelland Streets. This is another step forward in continuing to enhance traffic safety while creating a more visually pleasing environment for the City.

The design is inspired by the decorative tiles on the City Hall tower. Rather than painting on the asphalt, the crosswalk designs will be created using thermoplastic – a material that can better retain colors and withstand traffic. The project is being led by the Public Works and Recreation and Parks Departments.

"Safety is our priority and this crosswalk is another way to ensure the protection of our community,” said Brett Fulgoni, Director of Public Works. “This crosswalk will serve as a helpful traffic-calming measure, and add a distinctive character to our City streets."

The design received approval from the Public Arts Committee and the City’s Recreation and Parks Commission.

“"We believe that creating a more visually pleasing environment is important to building a sense of community and pride among our residents,” said Dennis Smitherman, Recreation Service Manager. “This decorative crosswalk is another great public art project that will make our City a more attractive and welcoming place to live and visit."
