City of Santa Maria's Tree Committee Mobilized to Celebrate Arbor Day

The City of Santa Maria recently celebrated Arbor Day when its Tree Committee planted a white crape myrtle at Rotary Centennial Park.

As a member of Tree City USA, the Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department continues to uphold its reputation as a green city dedicated to preserving its natural beauty. The Department successfully planted more than 500 trees last year. Its ambitious target is to achieve a 20 percent canopy cover within the next decade, ensuring a greener and healthier future for all residents.

Arbor Day serves as a poignant reminder of the vital role trees play in mitigating climate change, improving air quality, and enhancing the overall well-being of communities.

Recreation Services Manager Dennis Smitherman expressed his enthusiasm for Arbor Day activities, stating, "Trees are the lifeline of our city, providing countless benefits to both people and wildlife.”
